Beethoven from Beginning to End

The Emily Carr String Quartet has quickly established itself as one of BC’s finest music ensembles. Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony in Victoria BC, the Emily Carr String Quartet has performed in the US, Europe and Asia. They have collaborated with artists such as William Preucil, Jamie Parker, Arthur Rowe, the Alcan Quartet and the Tin Alley Quartet. The ECSQ has been featured on CBC radio’s “North by Northwest” and their CD “Hidden Treasure” was nominated for the 2012 classical recording of the year at the Western Canadian music awards.

The Emily Carr String Quartet will perform Beethoven’s first quartet*, a beautiful gentle work by a masterful Beethoven , followed by one of his last great works, the mighty Op.131, often considered one of the finest works ever written.

Beethoven’s Opus 131 continues to stand as a pillar of greatness in the quartet repertoire. Beethoven considered this his finest quartet; a work consisting of seven sections that are played virtually without pause and contain a vast range of forms, textures and feelings. Evident here are the master’s fondness for extreme and bizarre contrasts while still creating a profound unity from this diverse set of musical ideas.

In contrast Beethoven’s Op 18 #3 is his the most relaxed quartet with a bright, lyrical and humorous mood. It overflows with invention, passion and technical brilliance, while at times imitates the finest points of those who came before him, Hayden and Mozart. It closes with an uproarious cartoon chase that finishes in an exuberant romp. Opus 18 #3 is indeed a harbinger of Beethoven’s great string quartets to follow.
